As a baby, Buddy crawls into Santa’s gift sack at an orphanage on Christmas Eve. Santa unknowingly takes him back to the North Pole. With no parents, Buddy is raised as a toy-making elf by Santa's helpers. But as he grows up, he feels like he doesn’t belong and finds out he is really a human. He then travels to New York City to find his real dad, a workaholic book publisher.

ELF: Past Tense Verbs

This is one of the funniest Christmas movies I've seen. Will Farrell, who plays Buddy the elf, is a superb actor in this film who will leave you laughing again and again, no matter how many times you see the movie. It's a must see for all ages.

In this clip, Buddy travels from the North Pole to New York City. It's a great piece to focus on culture shock with your students and talk about their own encounters during their travels and first few months in a new country.
